Why can't you crush them

The machine needs to be able to read the barcode because the barcode is linked back to the vendor and they have to pay a fee to the NSW return & earn scheme. EG: Coke budgeted $6m for the first year of the scheme but only paid out $4m based on returns to the scheme.

The barcode has to be absolutely perfect.

There was a dude at the machines last month tearing the barcode off, straightening it out and hand feeding it into the machine and throwing the cans in the dumpster.

It's a ****, flawed system - even the people that devised it have that opinion (I have a contact). Also, NSW already had a world class recycle rate and the prediction was that it would only improve 7%.
